Government Property Month 2021 Fringe Event

Published: 17 March 2021

Christine St John Cox, Head of the Modern Energy Partnership at Energy Systems Catapult will be running a fringe event online for Government Property Month.

How is the public sector going to meet Net Zero and its decarbonisation targets?

Practical learnings on delivery and scalability through the Modern Energy Partners programme.

Session Overview

Amongst more recent updated national targets, the UK Government reaffirmed in the ten-point plan a target to achieve at least 50% direct carbon emission reduction across the public sector estate by 2032 against a 2017 baseline.

Since 2019, the Department Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) have funded an innovation programme that has focused on developing a systematic scalable methodology to develop decarbonisation plans and tested out the deliverability of those plans. Through collaboration with the Cabinet Office and other central government departments a testbed of 42 campus style sites has been used to test out approaches, gather insights and develop a central repository of information that can be shared across the public sector.

This talk will:

  • take you through the rationale for the programme, what it looked at and some of the key findings.
  • explore the technical solutions and some of the key systemic barriers for decarbonisation.
  • give you an understanding of the wealth of knowledge gathered about decarbonisation in the public sector and where to access it.
