Innovator Support: Levelise

Introduction

Digital services and platforms are critical to unlocking value from decentralisation, maximising the use of renewables and enabling more efficient operation of the whole energy system.

Levelise is working to make home battery systems more economically viable by better predicting consumption and solar generation and Energy Systems Catapult is offering expertise in consumer insight and domestic energy services, alongside potential partnering opportunities.

The Challenge and Opportunity

Accessing flexibility behind the increasing electricity consumption driven by decarbonisation of heat and transport is critical in addressing the energy trilemma, the interplay between carbon emissions, the security of energy supply, and energy costs.

Domestic batteries provide consumers with the ability to maximise self consumption of Solar PV generated power and earn additional income by participation in network balancing. However, such batteries have a high upfront cost and if purely used for self consumption, will have a long pay back period, even exceeding their warranty period, and reduced consumer take up.

The Innovation

Levelise is an Oxford-based technology start-up founded in March 2017 by a team of experienced, ex-Sharp hardware and software engineers, data scientists, and renewable energy specialists.

Levelise is working to make the home batteries work harder by predicting consumption and solar generation to increase the aggregate capacity across a fleet of batteries (The Virtual Power Plant – VPP) and using the revenues generated by selling power back to the grid to make them economically viable.

Our Approach

Our Innovator Support Platform (ISP) is providing tailored incubator support for selected SMEs utilising Catapult capabilities and assets, and delivery partner offerings.

Domestic VPP’s are complex and require solid understanding of system integration, energy trading and consumer engagement models.

Initially the ISP is drawing on Catapult expertise in Consumer Insight, exploring energy service propositions for the home by evaluating consumer acceptance of novel energy services, including validation within our Living Lab. Further support is likely to include Horizon Scanning to inform decisions on future service design and market timing.

The independence of the Catapult enables us to provide balanced views on the competitive landscape and potential partnering opportunities to expand routes to market.

  • Consumer Insight: As part of a Demand-side Response pilot project, our Consumer Insight team is offering expertise to Levelise.
  • Competitive Landscape: Catapult partner Delta EE are providing a current and forward looking (3-5 years) ‘landscape’ view of energy suppliers and their position within the market to identify organisations for Levelise to target engagement.
