Innovative businesses can rapidly design, price and trial new heat services with people in our Living Lab of 100-homes upgraded with room-by-room sensors and smart heating controls.

Over a number of years, Energy Systems Catapult has developed expertise in Energy Services to drive the creation of innovative business models that give consumers improved control over cost and comfort, and create a route to market for low carbon technology.

The Challenge and Opportunity

There’s lots of talk about energy as a service. Businesses expect it to transform the market, but they’re not sure how or when. Most want to know how it will affect them, but don’t know where to begin.

Since 2016, Energy Systems Catapult has been developing unparalleled insights into running energy service trials in real-world homes, undertaking detailed analysis of the vast array of consumer and technical data captured.

The Living Lab is made up of 100 homes spread across Newcastle, Manchester, South Wales and the West Midlands. They are all owner-occupied with a range of building types and occupancy. Homes have been equipped with a range of sensors and controls, connected to a cloud-based digital platform, to help you better understand how people use energy and their preferences for services and products.

Uniquely, you can market-test smart energy services through our digital, online marketplace. As these are real homes, we will offer your service or product to residents in a market trial – a great way to find out if people like your offer and what they might be willing to pay for it.

Design a simple service and trial it this winter

With real-time and historic home and consumer data, we can help you create and price an energy service with your brand, and offer it to our Living Lab residents from our digital marketplace. By Spring 2020, you’ll know who bought it, who didn’t and why.

Our team of experts can help you develop and test your service, providing unique real-world insight to help your business grow. We also provide the marketing, customer service and data analysis.

Within weeks, you could have:

  • developed a new energy service offering
  • understood who buys your service offering and why (and who doesn’t and why not) including consumer demographics
  • how much consumers are willing to pay for your service and what it costs you to serve them
  • insight to better understand your existing customers.

As our lab is established and independent. This means it is much cheaper and quicker to accelerate your innovation.
