The UK is committed to reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by at least 80% by 2050, relative to 1990 levels. For this to happen, we need to transform the UK economy while ensuring secure, low-carbon energy supplies to 2050.
The 2050 Calculator is an award-winning, user-friendly tool that lets you create your own UK emissions reduction pathway, and see the impact using real scientific data. The Calculator helps everyone engage in the debate and lets Government make sure our planning is consistent with this long-term aim.
The Energy Systems Catapult’s (ESC) Whole Systems Analysis team has been awarded the project of delivering an updated 2050 Calculator for the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS).
The 2050 Calculator was first published in 2011 and consists of 40 “levers” of change with a range of settings for each. The Calculator was designed to be simple, quick and easy to use while allowing stakeholders’ to keep a record of their selected pathways. The accelerating pace of technological change and the fact that the tool had not been updated to reflect this provided BEIS with an opportunity to refresh the data, levers and assumptions behind the 2050 Calculator.
The ESC in collaboration with BEIS will gather, analyse and summarise the data and assumptions required to update the Calculator. Information will be drawn from across the energy community including sector experts from academia, industry, NGOs, and the relevant government departments through interviews and a series of workshops. In conjunction with BEIS, the ESC will deliver new sector and lever descriptions, inform the updated lever settings and the assumptions behind these. The updated 2050 Calculator is scheduled for launch in October 2018.
In the meantime, if you would like to develop your own pathway using the existing tool, please go to 2050 Calculator Tool.
