Driving clean growth through local area energy planning

Published: 27 June 2018

To enable a cost effective low carbon transition, more advanced local area energy planning is needed to ensure the right solutions are implemented in the right place, at the right time.

Traditionally local area energy planning has been reactive and undertaken in different parts of the energy system in isolation.

A whole systems approach, based around robust evidence and stakeholder engagement, can help the cost-effective decarbonisation of local areas. More advanced energy system models help us understand the distinct characteristics of local energy systems, and provide options and choices needed to meet the challenges of climate change.

Open data and analytical tools will help us revolutionise local energy system planning, reduce costs and realise the benefits of a clean energy revolution.

At Energy Systems Catapult, we believe that the UK needs to adopt a new approach to local area energy planning to ensure that the transition to a clean and low carbon economy happens in the right way. Download a copy of our local area energy planning brochure for more information.
