Smart Meters: Free, accurate, and easy energy tracking

What are smart meters?

Smart meters are new electricity and gas meters that are being installed in homes and businesses by the energy companies. It does not cost anything to have a smart meter installed.

As well as the meters, a separate, small electronic display (usually called the in-home display) is also provided which makes it easy to see how much electricity and/or gas you are using and what it costs.

The meter sends energy usage information to your energy company every 30 seconds so your energy bill is always accurate.

  • No more estimated bills
  • No more sending meter readings

Smart meters for prepayment customers

Smart meters are also available for customers that pay for energy via a top up card or key (prepayment), With a prepayment smart meter:

  • You may not need to visit a shop to top up your credit as you can do it online or you can set automatic top ups so you wont be left without power because your credit has run out
  • The in-home display shows your credit balance, so you can keep an eye on usage and budgets
  • You won’t need to change your meter if you switch between prepayment and credit tariffs (including direct-debit tariffs).

Renting?

If you rent your home you can still have a smart meter installed but best to check with your landlord first.
