National Grid ESO and Energy Systems Catapult seek views on scope of "Whole Energy System" for new Future System Operator role

In April this year, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, OFGEM and National Grid ESO committed to creating an expert, independent Future System Operator (FSO) to support Great Britain’s progress towards net zero.

This new organisation will initially hold responsibilities across both the electricity and gas systems, with the ability to expand its remit to additional energy vectors when needed.

The Future System Operator will be well positioned to drive progress towards net zero, support energy security and deliver value for consumers through improved whole energy system decision making

But what does a whole energy system look like?

To help us answer this question National Grid ESO is partnering with Energy Systems Catapult to explore what energy stakeholders consider to be the scope of a “Whole Energy System”; what interactions, interdependencies and trade-offs exist in the energy system; and how we begin to usefully distinguish between these various boundaries in the pursuit of net zero.

We need your expertise and opinions!

Establishing an understanding of what a whole energy system means can be achieved only through collaboration with the sector, our valued energy stakeholders, through a series of discussion workshops intended to be held this September and October.

If you are interested in attending one of our workshops and helping us develop our understanding of what a whole energy system means, please express your interest by completing the form here.

Your time and efforts are very much appreciated; we’re looking forward to hearing from you!
