Automatic Asset Registration (AAR) was a £2 million programme funded by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) as part of the £65 million Flexibility Innovation Programme, which sought to enable large-scale widespread electricity system flexibility through smart, flexible, secure, and accessible technologies and markets. Under the AAR programme, the LCT Connect project – led by GreenSync Pty Limited and supported by Energy Systems Catapult – was completed in March 2023.
LCT Connect designed the processes, developed regulatory and policy recommendations, and piloted the technical solution. This solution provided a simplified and automated domestic low carbon technology (LCT) asset registration (AAR) process and a unified central asset repository or register (CAR). These are able to capture and keep up to date all relevant information about the registered asset needed by the industry to achieve asset visibility and unlock the full potential of mass-volume LCTs as we transition to Net Zero.
Since the beginning of LCT Connect, the energy system has seen rapid advancements in digitalisation and flexibility. Ofgem has appointed Elexon as the market facilitator for local energy flexibility and DESNZ released calls for evidence on developing an energy smart data scheme. The outputs from LCT Connect are the findings from the project partners and recommendations for consideration by government and Industry. These provide industry stakeholders with key insights into building effective digital tools that could enable asset visibility, coordination and enhanced flexibility provision.
