Practice Manager - Design

Salary: £60-65k + Benefits 

Status: Permanent /Full-time preferable (requests for part-time/flexible working arrangements are welcome)

The Energy Systems Catapult’s vision puts consumers at the heart of a low carbon energy transition. The Catapult’s Consumer Insight Team plays an important part in this, gathering and analysing data to produce insights about how and why consumers use energy, and using this insight to work with others to design and deliver consumer-centred low carbon energy products, services and policies. 

We work with businesses and government on some of the UK’s most exciting low carbon energy innovation projects. The Consumer Insight team is made up of 5 areas – Strategic Insight, Consumer Research, user Research and Trials (see more at peoplelab.energy), Fair Futures and Design.

We also work with influential industry and design representatives including Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Nesta, Citizens Advice, Behavioural Insights Team, the Royal College of Art, Design Council and others.

We have a range of design projects in our portfolio.  Some are relatively short assignments helping innovators progress from often technical experiences to appealing journeys that consumers understand, value and can use.  Other projects include longer term activities such as improving the user experience for participants in our Living Lab – a community of over 1,000 homes that take part in energy products and service trials.

Throughout our projects we aim to work together as researchers and designers to create products and services using an evidence-based user-centred approach.  These projects will involve working closely with both in-house and client-side user researchers, software developers, data scientists, and business analysts to create innovative user experiences and design collateral for future energy services.

The Design team is currently quite lean, with a Service Designer, UX Designer, and a Design Lead, supported by interim designers or agencies if required.  There’s plenty of room for growth and thought leadership as the low carbon industry increasingly understands and values design.

The Opportunity.

We’re looking for an experienced design leader to run the Design team. The team tackles complex experiences with often technical architectures, creating products and experiences that consumers love.

We want to continue to showcase our expertise in user-centred design, interaction design, service design, graphical prowess and creative problem solving to create great consumer experiences as we design for net zero.

Your personal data will be shared with Greenhouse Software, Inc., a cloud services provider located in the United States of America and engaged by us to help manage our recruitment and hiring process. Accordingly, if you are located outside of the United States, your personal data will be transferred to the United States once you submit it through this site. This transfer will be subject to appropriate additional safeguards under the Privacy Shield so as to comply with EU law. 

Data Retention

We will retain your personal data for a period of 12 months after we have communicated to you our decision about whether to appoint you to the role. We retain your personal data for that period so that we can show, in the event of a legal claim, that we have not discriminated against candidates on prohibited grounds and that we have conducted the recruitment exercise in a fair and transparent way. After this period, we will securely destroy your personal data in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
