About Us
Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation.
Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise. They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects.
We use that ‘whole energy’ system capability to support innovative companies -- small and large – to test, trial and scale their new products and services. Our impact comes when those innovators attract new customers, new investment and new grants so they can thrive in the future energy system.
Based in Birmingham, Energy Systems Catapult is part of a network of nine, world-leading technology and innovation centres, established by Innovate UK. The Catapult Network fosters collaboration between industry, government, research organisations, academia, and many others to transform great ideas into valuable products and services.
We believe that innovation often stems from connecting different areas and ideas, and that working together in person can be an important enabler for that. We therefore expect people to be in the Birmingham office ~40 days/year (roughly one day per week).
Context
The Energy Systems Catapult’s vision puts consumers at the heart of a low carbon energy transition. The Catapult’s Consumer Insight Team plays an important part in this, gathering and analysing data to produce insights about how and why consumers use energy, and using this insight to work with others to design and deliver consumer-centred low carbon energy products, services and policies.
We work with businesses and government on some of the UK’s most exciting low carbon energy innovation projects. The Consumer Insight team is made up of 5 areas – Strategic Insight, Market Research, User Research, and Design.
We also work with influential industry and design representatives including Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Nesta, Citizens Advice, TPXImpact, the Royal College of Art, Design Council and others.
Throughout our projects we aim to work together as researchers and designers to create evidence-based human-centred products and services.
About the role
As a Service Designer in the Design Team, you will support the planning and delivery of human-centred services alongside project management, research, commercial, and technical teams - designing feasible service propositions and customer experiences for the renewable energy market that have real impact on society and the planet.
You’ll be a networker, facilitator, communicator, and design-thinker, playing an active role in our small but influential design team - contributing to internal and external service design projects and the delivery of the design team strategy.
You’ll work on a mix of complex multi-agency long-term projects and short-term service design support projects for start-ups, often supported by Government funds, and confident managing delivery partners.
Your work will be a mix of doing the design work yourself, and directing design agencies to deliver work. The general balance is currently around 50/50, but this will fluctuate over the year based on the projects we get in.
We are growing quickly and there are lots of opportunities to learn new skills and work with our multi-disciplinary team with expertise in service design, user researcher, UX design, market research, and field trials. We are all working together to put consumers at the heart of the energy sector.
