About Energy Systems Catapult
Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation.
Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise. They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects.
Based in Birmingham, Energy Systems Catapult is part of a network of nine, world-leading technology and innovation centres. The Catapult Network fosters collaboration between industry, government, research organisations, academia, and many others to transform great ideas into valuable products and services.
We believe that innovation often stems from connecting different areas and ideas, and that working together in person can be an important enabler for that. We therefore expect people to be in the Birmingham office ~40 days/year (roughly one day per week).
The Team: who you’ll be working with
The Data & Analytics Manager leads the Data & Analytics team and reports into the Business Leader for Digital. The team, which already consists of two data scientists and one data engineer is involved in many of the largest research projects and trials Energy Systems Catapult is running at present. To get there, we need a lot more real-world evidence and data about how different actors and assets within the energy system consume energy, and what works in practice to reduce emissions resulting from these activities. Our team is currently at the beginning of an exciting journey to find ways to unlock even more value from the unique datasets the Catapult is collecting.
Most of the exciting research done by teams at the Catapult is underpinned by reliable, high-quality data. To meet these requirements, our colleagues have been building two flagship platforms to collect such data: from consumers and homes via the Living Lab, and from complex non-domestic sites via the recently launched InSite platform. The objective of the Data & Analytics team is to help turn the raw data collected by these platforms into trusted datasets that generate valuable insights and trusted research.
What you’d bring to the table:
As the Data & Analytics Manager, you’ll be leading a small team of data engineers, data scientists and data analysts that unlocks access to high-quality, reliable data from our core data platforms, such as the “Living Lab”, and provides insights from big data that unlocks innovation in the Energy Sector. Reporting into the Business Leader for Digital, you will be involved in scoping, planning and delivering projects with data engineering and analytics aspects for the Catapult. As this is a relatively new team, you will use your experience leading other data teams to shape the Catapult’s data strategy, team structure and related tech stack. On a day-to-day basis, you will be collaborating closely with other analytical teams at the Catapult, such as the Consumer Insights and AI teams, as well as external project partners and clients.
As a result, you will need to have:
