11/09/2024 - Value in Energy Data Series | Virtual energy system: creating the data sharing infrastructure

To address challenges around decarbonisation and leverage the opportunity of digitalisation, the Electricity System Operator (ESO) launched the Virtual Energy System in 2021, an ambitious programme with a vision to enable an ecosystem of connected digital twins of the entire GB energy landscape, working in parallel to the physical system.

The Virtual Energy System will act as a common framework with agreed access, operations, and security protocols, fostering industry collaboration and ensuring data security.  Over time, this framework will integrate digital twins of physical energy assets, such as power plants and grid infrastructure.

The Virtual Energy System Programme is currently developing the data sharing infrastructure; an open-source solution to enable scalable and secure data sharing between organisations
