Energy Systems Catapult has appointed Philip New as its Chief Executive Officer.
Philip New is the ex-CEO of BP Alternative Energy and will join the Energy Systems Catapult in November 2015. Mr New brings a wealth of experience, knowledge and industry relationships to the newly established Catapult. He has held a number of positions during his time at BP, with a focus on building new businesses, deploying innovative technologies and understanding changing markets.
The Energy Systems Catapult is one of a network of elite technology and innovation centres set up by Innovate UK. The Catapult works with companies that are focused on exploiting the new product and services opportunities created by the need to transform global energy systems; not only playing a part in accelerating technology based solutions, but also engaging with Government to address the market mechanisms and business models that will be required to enable such solutions.
The Energy Systems Catapult will create a critical mass for business and research innovation, focusing on electricity, heat and combustible gases, and is an important part of the UK’s innovation system, making a major long-term contribution to UK economic growth.
The new CEO joins the Energy Systems Catapult at a key time in its growth and development. The Catapult, which went live in the spring, is due to hold an engagement event in November 2015 and, with a budget of £10m per year, it aims to recruit a number of experienced industry experts in the coming months.
Phil New said: “I am really enthusiastic about joining the Energy Systems Catapult at such an important time for the company, but also for the industry. I am looking forward to the challenge of further developing and establishing the Catapult as a recognised leader in energy systems and I am delighted to be working with an organisation that will drive and support UK Plc.”
The Catapult has a board of successful engineers, entrepreneurs and financiers, and is chaired by Nick Winser.
Mr Winser said: “I am very excited about Philip’s appointment and I am confident that his skills and experience will be key to the creation of a strong, vigorous Catapult with a reputation of adding real value to the transformation of UK and global energy systems.”
Mr New will be replacing the Interim CEO Nick Smailes, who will stay on at the Energy Systems Catapult as the Business Development Director.
Mr Smailes said: “I am proud to have steered the Energy Systems Catapult through set-up since September 2014. I’m delighted to be handing over to someone as experienced as Philip as the Catapult enters its next phase of growth and to remain involved to support the delivery of real innovation impact in this important sector.”
Innovate UK Chief Executive Ruth McKernan said: “Philip will bring invaluable experience and expertise to the Energy Systems Catapult, and I look forward to working with him. He will drive the next stage of the Catapult as it works to seize the huge opportunities for UK businesses in global energy systems.”
