The government’s Clean Power 2030 Action Plan represents a pivotal moment in accelerating the decarbonisation of the UK’s electricity grid. Delivering cleaner energy to homes, businesses, and transport is essential if we’re to green our grid and get to Net Zero. The Government has committed to building new infrastructure at an unprecedented scale and pace and it is vital that the ambition on the demand side matches up.
Unlocking the full value of renewables requires a parallel focus on flexibility. Without this, we risk increasing costs for consumers while failing to maximise the potential of renewable investment. As highlighted in our recent report, Enabling Distributed Flexibility for Net Zero, distributed flexibility is essential for a resilient and cost-effective energy system. Distributed flexibility can complement transmission-connected flexible assets, such as interconnectors to Europe. The UK has a unique opportunity to lead the world in clean energy flexibility, driving economic growth and innovation. To achieve this, the government should prioritise:
By complementing renewable investment with bold action on flexibility, the UK can create a clean, affordable, and future-proof energy system.
