Rethinking Decarbonisation Incentives: Sectoral Assessment for Agriculture, Forestry and Other Land Use

Energy Systems Catapult has explored the issues and challenges associated with policy mechanisms to deliver climate mitigation in the agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU) sectors, as part of our Rethinking Decarbonisation Incentives project.

The AFOLU sectors are seldom covered by policies to incentivise lower emissions. Our 11 international case studies highlight the policy challenges including a perceived lack of abatement options, complex measuring, reporting and verification requirements, and the inherent risk of carbon leakage.

The report draws conclusions on what mechanisms could balance practicability, acceptability and effectiveness in the short term, and how the approach could be developed in the longer term.
