This study, supported by Energy Systems Catapult, ARUP and BGS used the latest literature and engagement with key stakeholders across the sector to understand the issues in detail. This has been summarised into this report highlighting seven barriers that contribute to inhibiting the development of hydrogen salt caverns.

Utilising salt caverns for hydrogen storage in the UK will contribute to the development of a resilient and flexible energy system as we transition away from natural gas. However, as demonstrated, there are several barriers that are inhibiting development. HII is committed to working with industry and government to understand and remove these barriers and support the development of hydrogen salt caverns in the UK.

Without adequate activity to address the barriers outlined, hydrogen storage in salt caverns will be delayed. This could result in an increased reliance on natural gas for a longer period, impacting the energy transition and jeopardising the realisation of a Net Zero energy system with adequate long-term resilience.
