Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation.

Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise. They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects.

Context

Meeting the UK’s 2050 climate change targets will require fundamental transformation of our entire energy system, raising huge challenges for policy reform, market design and the regulatory frameworks across the entire energy sector.

ESC takes a whole systems approach to understanding and analysing the transition to low carbon energy encompassing:

• the entire energy value chain from large scale production all the way to end consumers
• all energy vectors (e.g. electricity, heat and transport fuels)
• joining up physical requirements with policy, market and digital arrangements

The Business Model Innovation (BMI) team is a group of specialist energy consultants and analysts.

We work with private and public sector innovators to identify, analyse, test, and validate business plans and models that can help transform the UK energy system to meet carbon reduction targets.

We draw upon a wide range of ESC capabilities and external experts to develop evidence-based recommendations which help the innovators we work with to evaluate new business models and develop thought leadership for how to transform energy markets and the energy system.

The BMI team is part of our Systems Integrations capability area. BMI take a whole systems approach when looking at how innovation integrates with disparate physical, digital and market systems, against the background of rapid technological and societal change.

We are looking for a committed professional with a proven track record of undertaking qualitative research and problem solving to help identify and navigate new business models, propositions and opportunities. This could be in a Product, Commercial or Technical role in the private or public sector.

Role Purpose

Business Model Analysis involves the review and interpretation of the components which make up a business model, including the consumer desirability, technical feasibility and commercial viability.

The majority of this analysis is often delivered using qualitative techniques and methods.

The Business Model Analyst is responsible for supporting the design, assessment and testing of new business models in the energy sector. The BMI team regularly leads projects that involve facilitating a range of external partners and internal collaborators, for example through stakeholder interview and workshops. We work directly with local areas, private sector, SMEs in our incubation programmes, and with government.

As part of the role our core service is to:

• Assess new energy markets for opportunities and barriers to innovation
• Support the design of new concepts that can generate commercial, social and environmental value to the UK
• Evaluate and advise on new business models based on customer desirability, technical feasibility and commercial viability
• Develop best strategies to scale a new product or service

Our work is largely project based – delivering advice and support to innovators as part of their research & development strategy. The Business Model Analyst will predominantly support the Senior Business Modelling Consultant in the delivery of workshops, presentations and reports and on-going product development. It requires strong analytical (mainly qualitative), verbal and written communication skills. The work will be varied and fast paced and requires someone with a willingness to be adaptable and innovative in delivery.

Key Deliverables and Objectives

• Supporting the BMI team with the evaluation of new business models which may include business model design, value chain mapping, proposition reviews, commercial modelling and competitor analysis.
• Support delivery of business model projects, or contributions to projects, and help ensure they meet targets on time, budget and quality
• Strong market research and stakeholder management with an ability to work well with internal and external experts when assessing new business models and markets
• Support on internal business development, including the development of new solutions and propositions, in response to the requests from and needs of other ESC teams
• Other support to the team on activities such as process improvements, asset development and thought leadership.

Key Work Activities

• Supporting the BMI team with the design, evaluation and testing of new business models
• Work with colleagues internally and externally to develop and detail new ideas for business models that will better meet customer needs in different parts of the value chain
• Develop analysis and insight reports based on market research, on new energy markets and business models that can be utilised in projects and in thought leadership work for the team
• Co-ordinate the validation of business model research with other ESC teams including Consumer Insight, Digital, Modelling, and Policy and Regulation
• Supporting the production of insight reports and dissemination material to promote/disseminate our work and findings
• Produce high quality presentations, reports and business model analysis for ESC platforms and clients of the Business Model Innovation team
• Horizon scanning and maintaining ESC knowledge on the future of the energy market and business model innovation methods

What credentials are we ideally looking for?

• Track record of using initiative and various research methods to identify and solve problems
• Proven experience of operating in a commercial, analytical or research role
• Be highly numerate with strong analytical skills – qualitative and quantitative
• Ability to perform market and commercial analysis
• Understanding of UK electricity market and relevant commodity markets and the fundamental drivers which shape them
• Excellent IT skills, including spreadsheet skills Database skills and programming skills are not essential but will be thought of in high regard
• Understanding of energy policy principles and regulations and issues relevant to the energy transition
• Genuine commitment to the net zero transition, and/or environmental sustainability
• Versatile and adaptable in relation to subject matter and working styles (thought leadership to commercial consultancy etc), open-minded, resilient and intellectually creative
• Ability to structure, engage with and progress solutions to complex, multi-dimensional problems
• Be a clear communicator, able to explain complex issues to both specialists and non-specialists, in written and verbal form
• Demonstrated ability and confidence to build positive working relationships with external stakeholders and clients.
• Good writing and presenting skills, capable of communicating engagingly, confidently with accuracy & clarity with a range of generalist and specialist audiences
• Be experienced in using the usual suite of office software packages such as Excel, Word, Visio, PowerPoint
