Energy Systems Catapult is an independent research and technology organisation. Our mission is to accelerate Net Zero energy innovation. 

Launched in 2015 by Innovate UK, the Catapult has built a team of more than 250 people, with a range of technical, engineering, consumer, commercial, incubation, digital and policy expertise.They draw on sector-leading test facilities, modelling tools, and data collected from our back catalogue of more than 500 research projects. 

We use that ‘whole energy’ system capability to support innovative companies -- small and large – to test, trial and scale their new products and services. Our impact comes when those innovators attract new customers, new investment and new grants so they can thrive in the future energy system. 

Based in Birmingham, Energy Systems Catapult is part of a network of nine, world-leading technology and innovation centres, established by Innovate UK. The Catapult Network fosters collaboration between industry, government, research organisations, academia, and many others to transform great ideas into valuable products and services. 

Context  

The Energy Systems Digitalisation team explore how digital technologies and data can be used in the future energy system to enable and accelerate the transition to a low-carbon energy system. To do this the team works on wide-reaching, strategic reform projects as well as providing support to SMEs on innovation projects. 

In 2021 the team published a crucial report ‘Delivering a Digitalised Energy System’ which lay out the steps needed to create an energy system fit for a low carbon future. The recommendations have been accepted by the Government, Ofgem and industry which has led to an increased demand for expertise, guidance and insight. 

To meet that demand, the Energy Systems Digitalisation team has a wide range of projects requiring a range of skills and perspectives, such as: 

Supporting the energy sector to adopt the recommendations of the Energy Data Taskforce and Energy Digitalisation Taskforce.

Developing tools and techniques (such as technical assessments and workshops) to enable cultural and technical changes required to create a digitalised energy system

Working with industry clients to understand their digital and data challenges, highlight best practice and develop strategies which help organisations to achieve their goals.

Working with all organisations across the energy sector to provide technical advice and make connections with digital expertise. 

Management of internal tools, platforms and processes such as knowledge share platforms and technical assessments. 

Focus 

The Associate Consultant will work with the senior team members to deliver research and innovation projects for clients; improve internal digital tools; and develop new products and assets.  

Within the first 12 months, it is likely that the Associate Consultant will have been involved with a number of internal and external projects. 

A typical internal project could involve research to provide digital and data insight or producing a research report on a topic closely related to digital and data technologies. For example, a report assessing the potential impact of machine learning on the carbon intensity of the GB energy system. The Associate Consultant would work with other consultants to undertake research, analysis and writing of the report, including liaising with internal or external stakeholders to gather information or test outputs. 

A typical external project could involve working with a client to develop a digital or data solution or assessing the digital capabilities of an organisation. An Associate Consultant would be expected to take responsibility for specific project tasks which they would deliver with supervision and guidance from the wider delivery team. Activities could include planning workshops, developing technical proposals, or engaging with stakeholders. These tasks would be tailored to support the development of your expertise and broaden your experience. It is not a prerequisite for an applicant to have expertise in the energy sector. Training and development will be provided.

In the first 12 months we would expect the successful candidate to have developed a good understanding of the UK energy sector; have a sound understanding of the digital and data challenges across the industry; and be able to articulate the advantages and disadvantages of possible solutions. 

Some travel will be required to meet with clients for certain projects and the candidate will be expected to travel to our office in Birmingham for key internal meetings. This will be flexible but will typically be several times per month.

Data Retention
