Energy Systems Catapult is home to the Energy Launchpad, which runs Innovator Challanges to provide selected start-ups with tailored business incubation and acceleration support to help address barriers to growth, de-risk innovation, scale-up the business and secure investment.
Equiwatt incentivises consumers to save energy at peak times through an app-based rewards scheme, by using smart meter data to monitor household energy use and automatically turn-off appliances to reduce demand during peak events.
Energy Launchpad selected Equiwatt to help the firm prepare for further investment and scale up their customer base.
Equiwatt secured over £300,000 in investment to progress scale up plans through a funding round involving the North East Venture Fund.
- Progress the TRL of their digital platform from 3 to 4
- Increase the number of registered users ten-fold
- Find new potential commercial partners to further develop their business proposition
- Secure £310,000 of funding to invest in marketing, development and growth of the team
- Accelerate their business plans by about six months.
Aiming to help UK households reduce their energy costs and carbon intensity, Amp X are trialling their autonomous, digital energy assistant in up to 60 Living Lab households – a safe and affordable real-world test environment run by Energy Systems Catapult.
The Living Lab team managed the recruitment of independent residential consumers, utilise room-by room sensors, digital control and advanced data analytics to monitor performance such as energy consumption, air temperatures, relative humidity and local weather; and leverage consumer insights to analyse residents experience.
The Living Lab will analyse and validate the performance of the digital energy assistant to facilitate demand-side response, provide real-world consumer insight on ease of installation/set up/removal, usability and the quality of the consumer-interface with various in-home devices, including electric vehicles, smart meters, appliances, and Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning controls.
